1. hang about/around 闲荡,闲待;与…厮混

There were always groups of boys hanging about in the square.

广场上总有一群群男孩在闲荡。

I hung around the station for an hour but he never came.

我在车站等了一小时,但他始终没来。

The people I used to hang around with were much older than me.

以前和我混在一起的人都比我年长许多。

2. have nothing to do with ...无关

He said that he had nothing to do with the decision.

他说他和那个决定毫不相干。

We have nothing to do with each other.

我们彼此之间没有任何关系。

3. hold back 阻止;抑制;隐瞒;犹豫,畏缩不前

Stagnation in home sales is holding back economic recovery.

住房销售的停滞正阻碍着经济的复苏。


She kept trying to hold back her tears.

她一直在试图忍住不掉眼泪。


You seem to be holding something back.

你好像在隐瞒什么。


Be natural and graceful, don't hold back before the guests.

在客人面前要落落大方,不要畏惧退缩不敢见人。


4. jump to a conclusion 匆匆下结论    

Don't jump to a conclusion before considering all the facts. Be cautious.

在所有的事未考虑好之前,不要遽下结论,要慎重点。

There may be a simple explanation. Let’s not jump to conclusions.

也许理由很简单,我们还是不要仓促下结论。

Some critics jump to the conclusion that a tax increase is the only way to make up the revenue difference.

一些评论家断定增税是弥补收入差距的唯一途径。

5. keep/bear in mind 牢记,放在心上

You must always keep the reader in mind when writing a report.

写报道的时候你一定要考虑读者。

Bear in mind that the price does not include flights.

记住: 这个价格不包括机票。

More money should be given to housing, bearing in mind the problem of homelessness.

考虑到无家可归者的问题,应该在住房上投入更多的资金。


6. keep pace with 并驾齐驱,跟上

keep pace with sth/sb

Salaries have not always kept pace with inflation.

工资上涨的速度往往赶不上通货膨胀。

The supply of materials cannot keep pace with demand.

物资供不应求。

Slow down! I can't keep pace with you.

慢点!我跟不上你了。

7. lay off 解雇;休息,休养;停止;戒绝

The company laid off 250 workers in December.

公司在12月份解雇了250名工人。

Millions of people have been laid off in the steel industry.

钢铁工业有数百万人遭解雇。

The doctor advised me to lay off for a month after the operation. So I had to lay off running for several months.

医生建议我在手术后休息一个月,我只好数月内不再跑步了。


I think you'd better lay off alcohol for a while.

我认为你最好戒酒一段时间。

8. look into 窥视,朝里看;调查

He looked into the postbox to see if the letter was there.

Police are looking into the disappearance of two children.

9. look up to 尊敬,敬仰

I've always looked up to Bill for his courage and determination.

我一向佩服比尔的勇气和决心。


We look up to him as a hero.

我们把他尊为英雄。

10. long for 渴望 (long vi. 渴望)

She longed for the chance to speak to him in private.

她渴望有机会和他私下交谈。


long to do sth

She longed to speak to him in private.

她渴望和他私下交谈。
